Great News in Oregon: Each Animal Counts!An Oregon appellate court holds that abused animals should be treated as sentient crime victims and not mere property. This is a landmark decision.

In a mass animal neglect case in which ALDF filed an amicus brief in support of the state’s appeal, we just got a fantastic result from the Oregon Court of Appeals. The case is State v. Nix and the facts are simple. In 2008-2009 the defendant neglected many horses in Umatilla County.  In March of 2010 the defendant was tried on multiple charges of animal neglect (each count alleging the same timeframe and thus the conduct was treated as one criminal episode). …

Animal Abuse papers presented at The Stockholm Criminology Symposium

The 2012 Stockholm Criminology Symposium was a successful symposium attracting over 500 delegates from around 40 different countries. More than 200 speakers presented within the two main themes, Focusing on Victims of Crime – Comparing Crime Patterns and Improving Practice and Contemporary Criminology. Dr. Nuria Querol, member of the ASC, the National Link Coalition, the Animals and Society Institute among others, presented two papers on animal abuse.
