Animal Cruelty Unit

As a young prosecutor, I witnessed the direct correlation between animal cruelty and violence perpetrated against others. The abuse of a family pet was often the first indicator of domestic violence. A criminal who abuses animals exhibits disdain for life and a willingness to target and abuse the most defenseless of creatures.

As District Attorney, I created an animal abuse unit in this office staffed by specially trained prosecutors who are committed to the prevention of cruelty to animals and the prosecution of the abusers. This unit has successfully prosecuted more than 50 criminals engaged in abusing animals. Notable among these cases are: Ronald Hunlock, a corrections officer convicted as charged of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals for crushing five kittens to death in a trash compactor; Leonard Ammaturo also convicted as charged of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals for killing six Akitas by hanging them from bicycle racks in his garage, Michael Johnson convicted of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals for stabbing his own dog and Johnny Ruiz who was convicted of numerous crimes including Aggravated Cruelty to Animals for shooting a pit bull in its own fenced in yard.

Anyone with information regarding the abuse of animals is urged to contact their police department or Westchester Crime Stoppers at 800-898-TIPS.
