1. OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

Given the lack of no data regarding the study of animal abuse in Spain, we proposed a research project with the aims of:

(a) continue the study and evaluation of ASPD and Psychopathy within forensic population in Catalonia (Spain) with the addition of considering the history of animal abuse and/or partner with the RACA and BOAT checklists.

(b) offer the Centre d'Estudis Jurídics i Formació Especialitzada a new approach in the study of violence which includes the history of animal abuse and partner abuse.

2. METHODOLOGY

2.1 RESEARCHERS: Cuquerella Fuentes, Àngel; Querol Viñas, Núria, Ascione, Frank; Subirana Domènech, Mercè.

2.2 PROCEDURE:

2.2.1 This study was carried out with 24 male inmates of the Prison of Barcelona, although the data base for the study also includes up to 50 case studies in order to evaluate the PCL:SV.

The selection of the case studies was not random but oriented to alleged or sentenced violent perpetrators of violent felonies either attempted or commited. For that purpose, we were advised by the therapists and social workers who provided us with previous reports on behaviors and interviews.

2.2.2 Firstly, the PCL:SV was passed (Hart, Cox i Hare, 1995); complementary information was obtained from forensic files and reports and interviews from relatives. Secondly, depending on the results from PCL:SV, we gave the RACA (Reports of Animal Care and Abuse; Ascione 2002) and BOAT (Boat Inventory on Animal-Related Experiencies; Barbara Boat & Ascione 2002) checklists.

TYPES OF FELONY

52% of the inmates were convicted for robbery (32% as an isolated felony and 20% associated with physical injuries). 24% were convicted for homicide, murder or attempted murder. The % of sexual aggressors was low (6%) but, except for one case, the rest were serial sexual agressors (with more than 4 aggressions per inmate). In some cases there were two or more associated felonies (homicide and robbery, sexual aggression and physical injuries, etc. ).

RESULTS

a) PCL:SV

Punctuation related to Factor II is higher, which indicates a tendence to anti-social behavior rather than Factor I (manipulation, shallow affection, callousness).

b) THE Mc DONALD TRIAD/ HOMICIDAL TRIAD

Of the subsample of 24 inmates recruited for this study, 23,5% of them had a history of complete triad (cruelty to animals, enuresis and pyromania), 65% presented incomplete triad (one/two items).

The descriptive analysis of the items of the triad gives the following percentages:

Animal abuse 41,7 %; pyromania: 71% and enuresis: 58,8 % of the subsample. The figures were even or higher than other studies in inmates which reflects the need of a deeper understanding and investigation of the triad, specially among child-adolescent population in order to achieve early intervention.

The inmates reported having seen or having done it themselves: tie firecrackers to dogs’ tails, crush birds after trapping them with glue-traps, burn cats/dogs “for pleasure” or “to eat them”, stone farm or stray animals, crush puppies or beat their own pet dog “to release wrath/anger/preassure”.

c) THE PINCUS TRIAD

Given the pronostic value of this triad (Pincus, 2001): cranial trauma+ paranoia+ history of psychological/physical/sexual abuse (as victims) it is remarkable that 41% of the inmates presented the complete triad and 29,4% one or two items.

The descriptive analysis of the items of the triad gives the following percentages:

76,4% cranial trauma, 53% paranoia and 47% psychological/ physical/ sexual abuse.

It is also interestig to point out the fact that some sexual aggressors reported for the first time, having been sexually molested during childhood or adolescence.

In the case studies we have observed conduct disorder and important lack of empathy, specially in the individuals with a high rate of violence in their felonies. Both triads evaluate the dangerousness or can be an important indicator for risk assessment.
