Cruelty to animals by juveniles may be one of the earliest warning signs that a child is in trouble. It may be a sign that the child is in an unsafe situation, such as the presence of domestic violence or child abuse. It may also be a sign that the child is exhibiting early symptoms of antisocial behavior.

Linking the Circles of Prevention and Intervention.
"With the current epidemic of youth violence, we all need to recognize its precursors to enable early intervention. This succinct, readable manual raises the important link between animal violence and human violence and provides educational material and a screening tool that, commendably, aims to assist many kinds of people in recognizing and intervening with these dangerous behaviors."
