Flamingoes, Pelican Decapitated At Illinois Zoo

DECATUR, Ill. -- Three men have been arrested and charged in connection with the decapitation of flamingoes and a pelican at a zoo in Decatur, Illinois.

Authorities describe the case as a theft attempt gone awry. They say the men urged a 15-year-old to break into the Scovill Zoo on Halloween to steal some chickens. They believe the teen went after two Chilean flamingoes and a white pelican after he wasn't able to find any chickens.

The three men are accused of helping the teen cover up the crime. Authorities say one man tried to hide evidence by putting parts of the flamingoes and pelican in rural mailboxes.

Officials say the community has raised more than $14,000 to replace the birds.

The case against the teen is pending.
