Seven Animals Attacked By Children In Six Months

WASHINGTON -- A series of violent crimes against animals in the District is causing concern because the abuse has come at the hands of children.
During the past six months, the Washington Humane Society says, there have been seven vicious attacks on animals, and they're wondering if the District has an epidemic on its hands. Some of the cases involve children as young as 6.
Earlier this month, two boys ages 7 and 8 beat a tabby cat with a baseball bat, then soaked it in bleach. The Washington Humane Society had to put it to sleep.
In some of the other cases, Angel, a lab mix, was beaten with a garden hose by 30 D.C. juveniles; a 14-year-old boy locked his bedroom door and beat his border collie; six boys, ages 6 to 12, beat a dog tied in a yard with sticks, metal poles and a shovel; and a 13-year-old boy beat his family's 3-month-old puppy.
The Humane Society is trying to stem the violence by sending an animal educator into D.C.-area classrooms. Shakela Brown helps kids relate to animals' feelings.
Animal investigators say they don't know why there's a spike in kids abusing pets, but they say it's a wake up call.
