SB 2714, which protects animals by mandating the reporting of animal abuse by social services workers, passes the legislature.
Specifically, SB 2714 would require employees of any county child or adult protective services agency, acting within the course and scope of their employment, to report suspected animal abuse, animal cruelty, or neglect to an entity responsible for investigating reports of suspected animal abuse or neglect in that county.
Family violence is about power and control. Abusers often victimize the least powerful members of their family, including the pets. A study by Deviny, Dickert, and Lockwood revealed that animals were abused in 88% of the families in which children are abused.
Please contact Governor Bredesen and ask him to sign SB 2714 into law.
