He was also ordered to pay more than $928,000 for the care of the 54 dogs seized from his property. ALDF applauds U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson's sentence, as it exceeds the 12-18 month sentence recommend by the U.S. Attorney, and it takes into account the cost of care for the dogs rescued from Vick's fighting operation. |

Michael Vick Earns 23 Months in Prison
December 10, 2007
Today, fallen NFL star Michael Vick faced the music at his sentencing for dogfighting crimes in a Richmond, Va., federal court.
"You were instrumental in organizing and promoting this activity," U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson told Vick, according to Bloomberg.com. Hudson sentenced the former player to 23 months in a federal prison and three years probation.
"He was in this thing up to his neck with the other defendants," the judge told Forbes.com.
Vick's sentencing comes four months after he pleaded guilty to federal dogfighting charges and ten days after Judge Hudson sentenced two of his codefendants, Purnell Peace and Quanis Phillips, to 18 and 21 months respectively.
While all four men participated in the crimes detailed in the caseincluding the electrocution and hanging of poorly-performing fighting dogsVick's name focused the nation's attention on the realities and pervasiveness of dogfighting.

| With law enforcement cracking down on dogfighters, things are looking up for pit bulls. |
John Goodwin, Manager of Animal Fighting Issues for The HSUS, stated, "We commend Judge Hudson for sending a strong message to animal fighting criminals: Dogfighting is a dead-end activity that carries meaningful penalties."
Bad for Fighters, Good for Dogs
While dogfighting has proved bad business for Michael Vick and his cohorts, the increased public awareness of the blood sport and a determination to stop it may yet prove beneficial to the millions of pit bulls bred and abused for dogfighting every year.
As reports of dogfighting are on the rise across the country, legislatures in at least 25 states will consider bills in 2008 to increase the penalties for those convicted of animal fighting. Congress is also considering legislation to further crack down on dogfighters.
We look forward to building upon these efforts to save the countless thousands of dogs abused and killed every year in bloody animal fighting activities in the United states.

| Dear Nuria Querol Vinas:
Michael Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison and three years probation this morning for his role in the "Bad Newz Kennels" dogfighting operation and his participation in the brutal killing of several dogs that did not "perform well". During his sentencing the suspended football star apologized to the court and his family. However, Judge Henry Hudson told him, "You need to apologize to the millions of young people who looked up to you" In August, Michael Vick entered a plea agreement stating that he took part in an illegal, interstate. Vick said he knew dogs that did not perform well were killed. He said the fights involved gambling although he did not personally place bets. To read the full text of the plea submitted by Michael Vick click Judge Hudson called Vick's actions "cruel and inhumane" and said that Vick was a full partner in "Bad Newz Kennels" and was therefore equally culpable in all crimes committed. Two of Vick's codefendants were sentenced last week; Purnell Peace and Quanis Phillips, received 18 and 21 months respectively. The final defendant in this case, Tony Taylor, will be sentenced this Friday. "
Two of Vick's codefendants were sentenced last week; Purnell Peace and Quanis Phillips, received 18 and 21 months respectively. The final defendant in this case, Tony Taylor, will be sentenced this Friday.
Prior to the sentencing today Assistant U.S. Attorney General Michael Gill asked Judge Hudson to sentence Michael Vick to jail time at the high end of the guideline range of 18-24 months. Write to the Honorable Judge Henry Hudson and Assistant U.S. Attorney General Michael Gill and thank them for taking a strong stance against dogfighting. Thank you for taking a strong stance in the sentencing of Michael Vick and his codefendants. Your comments and your stedfast adherence to the law send a clear message to dogfighters across the country that these illegal and immoral activities will not go unpunished." |
