MAN ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGEDLY BEATING PIGS
Friday, January 27, 2006

Nocona Police arrested one man today in connection with the beating of several FFA pigs Saturday night, and they believe more people might be involved. 18-year-old Mitch Dewayne Atteberry is charged with burglary of a building and criminal mischief. Police say Atteberry broke into the Ag building in Nocona on Saturday night and let loose the pigs. He then began beating several pigs with a shovel and ran over them with a truck. Three of the pigs died and several more were injured. The pigs in the barn belonged to Nocona students and some were to be shown in the Houston Livestock Show. Nocona Police Chief Kent Holcomb says, "They get pigs from when they were little, and they raise them and feed them, and doctor them and walk them, and spend lots of time and money on these projects."

Chief Holcomb says Atteberry will not face animal cruelty charges because swine are not included in the Animal Cruelty Act. He believes alcohol might be a factor.
