DECATUR, Tenn. A grand jury in Decatur has indicted a trailer park owner accused of beating two puppies to death with a hammer.
Ned Proffitt of Decatur is charged with two felony counts of cruelty to animals.
The 67-year-old Proffitt said in a telephone interview he killed the animals to end their suffering after he accidentally shot them while trying to kill a stray. He said when he saw the pups weren't dead, he did what he considered to be the humane thing and beat them to death with a hammer.
A neighbor's home video shows the animal killings on Halloween.
Proffitt said some residents of the mobile home park had complained about being frightened by stray dogs.
The felony under which Proffitt is charged is punishable by a one-to-six-year sentence and up to a three-thousand-dollar fine.
